Urbanization: Energy Efficient Housing
2022 High School Winners
By: Sasha Kobrina & Colette Siegel
Sasha Kobrina and Colette Siegel are in the 9th grade at the Ermitage International School, just outside of Paris, France. They heard about the contest from their teacher when they were learning about renewable energy. Colette and Sasha decided to submit their video to the contest because of their interest in urbanization. Sasha shared that “small-scale urbanization touches all of us.” For example, she’s noticed that where she lives, “little bushy yards are being replaced by denser apartment buildings.” Colette became interested in the topic while living in Tokyo “where urbanization was a part of daily life.”
Sasha took the lead with the filmmaking and design of the video. She has been practicing animation and art since she was eleven and has created videos on her own in the past. Colette and Sasha worked together on the research, structure, and script of the video. They shared that the most challenging part of creating the video was condensing the information down into a one-minute video. They recommend planning ahead, allocating enough time to complete the project and having a clear structure to make sure you are sharing the most relevant points. Sasha plans on using the prize money to take an art animation prep course for younger students at a local university, and Colette is going to save her winnings but might use some on books and art supplies.
In her free time, Sasha likes to ride horses and is into drawing, digital art, and animation. Sasha’s sister, who is an architect in London, inspires her and she shared that “aside from the hundreds of artists that I admire, my main role model is my sister because she’s always supported me and I like her work ethic.” Sasha won an audience choice award for animation a couple of years ago and is “100 percent sure she wants to go into filmmaking and animation.”
Colette plays the piano, paints, reads, and tries to surf on every holiday. Her favorite place to surf is in Brittany, France. Colette’s cousin, who works in fashion, inspires her because she would like to work in the art field in the future. Colette is also interested in pursuing a career in literature or history.
