Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy is provided by Population Connection d/b/a Population Education to underscore our commitment to privacy includes being transparent about the nature and extent of what information we collect and process and the rights that may be available to you with respect to your information. Population Education exercises reasonable precautions when it receives information from you in connection with accessing and using this website (the “Site”). We have created this Privacy Policy to inform you of the type of information we gather, what we do with that information, and the circumstances under which we may disclose your information. For example, Population Education does not collect personal information about individuals except when specifically, and knowingly provided by such individuals. Population Education does not share personal information to any third parties except in the limited circumstances described in this Privacy Policy. We ask that you please read this Privacy Policy carefully.

1. General Policy

The policy of Population Education is to respect and protect the privacy of our users. To fulfill this policy, Population Education agrees to exercise reasonable precautions to maintain the confidentiality of information provided by you in connection with accessing and using the Site. Population Education also agrees to post prominently and in plain language its specific privacy policies. Population Education does not collect personal information about individuals except when specifically, and knowingly provided by such individuals. Population Education does not share personal information to any third parties except in the limited circumstances described in this Privacy Policy.

2. Collection and Use of Personal Information

Population Education uses the Site to provide a means for students to submit entries to a student video contest. In order to submit a video for consideration, students must provide certain personal information, including name, grade, school name and address, email and phone number. This personal information is only used by Population Education staff to verify student eligibility for the contest and to communicate with students during the contest period from submission through the judging process. If a student’s video is selected as a finalist, the student must provide additional personal information, including date of birth, home address, and the name and email of a parent or guardian. A photo will be requested but is not required. This personal information is only used by Population Education staff to confirm student eligibility for being selected as a winner and to communicate with students during the finalist and winner announcement period.

Population Education collects and processes your personal information only with your consent or, for those students below the age at which they can provide consent under applicable laws, the consent or authorization of your parent or guardian. Individuals can always refuse to supply personal information, can withdraw their previously-given consent to process such information, and can request access to, or correction or removal of, their personal data, with the caveat that doing so may prevent them from engaging in certain website-related activities for which their personal information is necessary (such as participating in the video contest). By using and submitting information through the Site, you consent to Population Education’s processing of your personal data in a manner consistent with this Privacy Policy.

3. Additional Disclosure to Protect People or Property or As Required by Law.

In addition to the disclosures otherwise permitted by this privacy policy, Population Education may disclose personal information if we have a good-faith belief that doing so is required by a subpoena or other judicial or administrative order or otherwise required by law. Additionally, Population Education may disclose personal information where we, in good faith, deem it appropriate or necessary to identify, contact, or bring legal action against someone who may be causing injury to or interference with (either intentionally or unintentionally) the rights or property of Population Education, any individual, or the general public; maintain and protect the security and integrity of our services or infrastructure; protect ourselves and our services from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; investigate and defend ourselves against third-party claims or allegations; or assist government enforcement agencies.

4. Web Data and Cookies

In addition to your personal information, Population Education may also collect standard Web server traffic pattern information generated by your use of the Site. General traffic, site usage, and length-of-stay information may be collected and stored in log files for the purpose of improving the user experience. This type of information is shared externally only on an aggregated basis.

Visitors should be aware that non-personal and some personal information and data may be automatically collected on the Site through the use of “cookies.” Cookies are small text files stored as text on a computer hard drive. Websites can use cookies to recognize repeat visitors, facilitate the visitor’s ongoing access to and use of the site, and allow a site to track usage behavior and compile aggregate data that will allow content improvements. Population Education uses cookie technology to obtain non-personal and personal information from its online visitors in order to improve visitors’ online experience, facilitate their visit within our Site and advertise products and services that may be of interest to users. We do not, however, connect cookie data to personal data that includes names, email addresses, or other identifiable information.

If a visitor does not want information collected through the use of cookies, there is a simple procedure in most browsers that allows the visitor to deny or accept the cookie feature. You can choose to prevent Population Education from establishing a unique user-ID. We use a tool called “Google Analytics” to collect information about use of the Site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit the Site, what pages they visit when they do so, and what other sites they used prior to coming to the Site. We use the information we get from Google Analytics only to improve the Site. We do not combine the information collected through the use of Google Analytics with personal information. Although Google Analytics uses a cookie on your web browser to identify you as a unique user the next time you visit a site, the cookie cannot be used by anyone but Google. Google’s ability to use and share information collected by Google Analytics about your visits to this Site is restricted by the Google Analytics Terms of Use and the Google Privacy Policy. You can prevent Google Analytics from recognizing you on return visits to our Site by disabling cookies on your browser.

This Site contains links to websites and resources maintained by other individuals and organizations. Population Education is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content on any of these other websites. Note also that the linked site may collect personal information from you when you link to their site and that this collecting of information is not subject to the control of Population Education. To ensure protection of your privacy, always review the privacy policies of the site you visit by linking from this Site.

6. Our Commitment to Children’s Privacy

Protecting the privacy of the very young is especially important. We collect or maintain information at the Site from persons under age 16 only for the limited purposes of allowing interested students to submit entries for the Student Video Contest and to access other educational content. All students from outside of the U.S. must obtain consent or authorization of a parent or guardian before entering the contest or entering any personal information. This consent is provided to Population Education via the Consent Form for International Students that can be attached to the electronic submission form. Students in the U.S. that are in middle school or under the age of 13 must obtain the consent or authorization of a parent or guardian before entering the contest or entering any personal information. This consent is provided to Population Education via the Consent Form for U.S. Students in Middle School or Under 13 that can be attached to the electronic submission form. Students selected as finalists for the Student Video Contest must submit the Student Video Contest Finalist Video Release – Parent/Guardian Form signed by a parent or guardian in order to be eligible to be selected as a winner. Winners of the Student Video Contest will be posted on the Site, including the winning video submission and the student’s name and school. We may also use winners’ names, photographs, statements, quotes, testimonials, and video submissions for advertising, publicity, and promotional purposes. Other student personal information will be kept private and not disclosed to any third party.

Any person who provides Personal Information through this Site represents to us that he or she is 16 years of age or older, or has obtained the consent or authorization of a parent or guardian. If Population Education learns that personal information has been collected from a user under 16 years of age on or through this Site without the consent or authorization of a parent or guardian, then Population Education will take the appropriate steps to cause this information to be deleted.

7. Storage and Retention of Personal Information

Your information collected through the Site is stored and processed on servers in the United States. Users in the European Union should be aware that their data will be transferred to the United States and that the European Commission has not found United States law to adequately protect the rights of data subjects. Population Education takes reasonable precautions to ensure that all processing activities conducted on our behalf are compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Under that regulation, EU users who believe their data has been misused have the right to lodge a complaint with their Member State’s supervisory authority.

In all cases, data will be stored only for as long as it is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected. Data provided on the contest entry form, consent form, permission form and finalist form by users that were selected as finalists or winners will be saved on Population Education’s secure server. Data provided by other users on the contest entry form or participation consent form is stored for one year following the contest on a backup server.

8. Accessing and Correcting Your Information

You can contact Population Education by email at [email protected] to inquire if we are keeping personal information about you. If we do have personal information about you, we will provide you with a readable copy of such personal information at no charge. Factual errors in your personal information, including out-of-date information, can be corrected by sending an email to [email protected] with a request for such a change that credibly shows our error.

You may always opt out of receiving some or all communications from us by unsubscribing from our email list or updating your email preferences. You can also update your email preferences here. To remove any personal information from our database, send an e-mail to [email protected] with the word “remove” in the subject line.

9. Notice and Procedure for Making Claims of Copyright Infringement

It is Population Education policy to respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply with applicable international intellectual property law (including, in the United States, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act). If you believe that your work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, please provide the Population Education Copyright Agent with the written information specified below. Please note that this procedure is exclusively for notifying Population Education and its affiliates that your copyrighted material has been infringed.

  • An electronic or physical signature of the copyright owner or the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the copyright interest;
  • A description of the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed upon;
  • A description of where the material that you claim is infringing is located;
  • Your address, telephone number, and e-mail address;

10. Security Statement

In an effort to safeguard your personal information, Population Education takes all reasonable precautions to protect the information provided through the Site or otherwise in its possession. The complete Site runs under a security certificate and all data passed is encrypted. The Site employs Brute Force Attack monitoring and blocking and a website application firewall. Hourly malware scans with bot monitoring and blocking is in place, as is Google analytics and all tracking data anonymization. Nevertheless, despite our best efforts, no transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be totally secure.

11. Effect of Future Changes to this Privacy Policy

Population Education reserves the right to change this Privacy Policy at any time. However, we will not apply any new policies to any of your personal data collected under an old policy without contacting you at the email address you provide and giving you the opportunity to opt out of any use of your data under the changed policy.
